The Alternative Medicine Missed This Big Time

At last I found the incident from the 80s that I always wanted to use to illustrate a point.
Innocent public felt sick, not knowing that burgers started to contain a thyroid hormone, without any fault to the meat industry (though due to the stop of kosher meat production at a plant) - link below.
It was a heartland, small town area, no big city quacks and alternative medicine clowns.

What if these got involved?
Homeopaths: "this is due to industrial pollution. We have just the right medicine - like cures like. We have a pill just for you, PCB, heavy metals, whatever"
Reflexologists: people are getting hypnotized by TV into bad posture, resulting in muscle knots"
Dr Mercola: "we have a medicine that ancient Chinese doctors used for centuries against pains and aches due to viruses and bacteria that attack us every day. It's called Snakol Serpentinium. Just 10USD a bottle of 30 will cure the entire family"
Acupuncturists:"it's only fibromyalgia."

This Onion Has No Magnetic Powers Over Microbes: An Experiment.

Ever sicne Internet's early days, when it comprised Usenet forums, till the advent of smartphones and Whatsapp, this tale has been circulating for years claiming that onions had saved a farmer from the influenza outbreak that killed 40 million people in 1919. A miracle onion that cured someone had been brought to a doctor in Oregon. He placed it under a microscope and saw tons of bacteria and viruses.
Mind you, that doctor must have been very rich considering the times, since microscopes were extremely expensive. Doctors back then did not have the time to research bacteria, because it was a subject of a cutting edge research in the academia of that time, and was referred to as a microbe. It was only in 1920 when Paul Ehrlich was able to use a microscope to see the results of his experiments of staining bacteria to study their morphology.
Viruses, thousands times smaller than bacteria,  have been visualized in a fuzzy form for the first time ever in the 1930s in Nazi Germany, where an X-Ray scanning microscope was developed for this purpose. The scanning microscope was the size of a room. Today viruses are looked at through an electron scanning microscope, which is the size of a family refrigerator. The cheapest electron mcirsocpe, according to online queries, costs just above $1 million.

The following experiment to see how an onion would absorb viruses and bacteria, hopefully by seeing its change from white to the ominous black, according to many ancient accounts. it's better to carry out an experiment:
A 1/3 of a freshly cut onion, and different parts of it, were saved in a cup. The cup was placed near a chicken which produces excrement many times a day. Chicken excrement is known to contain more bacteria, some of it dangerous and some famously parasitic, like Campylobacter and viruses than other animals.
Since Feb 16 the cup was photographed 10 times or so (obvious from the time stamps of the photographs) The onion changed color to gentle beige, kept drying, then was dry as a cardboard.
The experiment made the chicken coop smell like a kitchen.
The onion did not kill the chicken, which has kept on laying eggs, which have been eaten.
The photos below are from my own experiment's original photos. They are at this Google Photos collection of my own https://photos.app.goo.gl/9izraUoWiAhqRkHYA.

The start:

Sunday, March 1, 2020, 9:50 AM -

Wednesday, March 4, 2020, 6:46 AM -

Then the experiment was forgotten till Tuesday, March 17, 2020, 2:30 PM, the end:

Copy Paste Pseudoscience: Snake Oil, Homeopathic botulism

s

In Homeopathy, the crux of the quackery is the dilution.
In other words, the dilution is the solution to the health challenges.
As if the homeopathic memory exists, albeit it has never been tested in any lab - the memory retained by water that contains very low amount of the dangerous substance that caused the illness, or may cause the illness. In this snake oil business, dilution is the reverse, it is dynamization. Read the wikipedia article (link ont he bottom) about the meaninglessness of dilutions and the homeopathy's necessity to envoke the the plain water's memory for the molecules of a substance sold as a medicine.

The D marking indicates the dilution. D30 means the homeopathic concoction contains a substance diluted 30 fold from its original.
There are D1000, and even D1000000

To decode homeopathic secrets, one needs to keep in mind that the quackery is aware of the ill fame of many of the ingredients, like botulism, snake venom, etc. These are dressed up in their fancy Latinized names. A pit viper's venom can be represented as lachesis, cobra - Naja tripudiens. It impresses, and soothes the sufferer, and comforts him with having to pay for literally - snake oil.

The psychology of folk medicine is the underlying thought behind homeopathy. It is a form of wishful thinking, and a leap of optimism. A cobra is a lethal animal, but maybe, jsut maybe, its poison in low amounts may do the opposite?
Digitalis is a poisonous plant, it can stop a heart, the conventional medicine invested billions in researching it - so maybe having its Latin name will steal the conventional medicine's intellectual property and translate into sales of homeopathic witche's brew?

Foxy sciencespeak: Mitochondria cells and DNA cellular level. Benzene is bad, so is benzoate.

I was asked about this writer's view of sodium benzoate, http://www.naturalnews.com/033726_sodium_benzoate_cancer.html

I like the gems from the article:
"mitochondria cells"
"DNA cellular level"
mitochondria are in the same cell with nucleus, but within the cell there is no other cells of any kind. All cells have mitochondria.
there is no such a thing as a DNA cellular, or non-cellular level. There are no levels. There is the nucleus, with the father-mother DNA information, and there is mitochondria, with maternal DNA only.

fun!

I don't think there's any more danger than eating it in berries. The heating process would not destroy this, as any stable aromatic ring compound. It would form another organic salt within the mass of the food.

I've read this article and recognize the amateur logic from years ago.
Any acid getting into our bodies reacts naturally with the abundance of sodium, calcium, and potassium, and is transported to the tissues, and used as needed. The amount over the natural demand gets into bloodstream and taken up by liver, which acts like a chemical reactor. The article should have informed readers of that correctly, while describing kidneys as the filter.

"Sodium benzoate chokes out your body's nutrients at the DNA cellular level by depriving mitochondria cells of oxygen,"
Another crude vested interest misinformation, or ignorance. At the DNA level there's no function of nutrition. It is strictly genetic programming, for growth, or cellular upkeep.
The only object capable of depriving anything of oxygen is cyanide or carbon monoxide.
Mitochondria does possess DNA, which is coded with exclusively maternal information, and as DNA has zero role in nutrition, power production, etc. The article is totally oblivious of the Krebs cycle.
The liver would more likely metabolize a benzoic salt in building amino acids, or something else useful, as needed. It would not be converted back to benzene. It is benzene from environmental pollution that would get metabolized into benzoic salt. In large amounts, benzene would overwhelm the liver, causing production of random organic molecules that would foul up the genetic coding.
The article is written with good will and intuition and guess, but does not bring references to scientific trials, as Dr. Adkins did in his book.

This Is The Crux of Religion Of FRAO and Health Business Charlatans.

The Free Radical craze and the worship of Anti Oxidants has become the bread and butter of the health concern charlatancy. The key word of the FRAO religion is still "theory" started by pre-web sitting in public libraries, and then reading each other's web cobweb fantasy science sites.

All the talk can still be boiled down to the fact that every biochemical in the living cell has a free radical phase, and maybe several such phases, as it arrives at its final destination of the Krebs cycle, or a cell building block. For example, intermediate molecules that form cell wall, hemoglobin, lipids, all go through a split second long stage of being a free radical.

Free radicals swimming free in a body means the body is dead. The acidity-basicity of a living organism is precise. Even a small amount of any free radical means that a healthy organism will have plenty of the buffer system to absorb it, just like any spike of acid or base, without any need for the health charlatancy's concepts of body defense, friendly substances, good herbs, etc.

The buffer system of a living organism is the ever present, major three or four acids: phosphoric, carbonic, acetic, and citric, with their corresponding electrolytes. IV drips always use any of these safely, other than saline, which does not participate in metabolism.

Anti oxidants can't just always be ready to hang around and immediately neutralize free radicals. Anti oxidants are different molecules, and can't have the 100% functionality in the insane soup of a living organism, balanced at a specific acidity, and having a unique organic makeup, i.e., proteins being anionic and cationic, lipids being unfriendly to water-soluble molecules.

To add to the soup are the white blood cells, which are self-defense amoebas, which hunt for any material that triggered the body's alarm as having a foreign surface.

So the general public is overdosing on vitamin c, a prime antioxidant, but it is not active in every part of the body, or cell, or won't even get to all cells. Because if there's too much of it, the natural buffer chemistry kicks in and the vitamin c is made harmless, but still theoretically available to perform as a vitamin.
Same goes for vitamin E. It is oil-soluble. It is very safe to remember that it would function in a lipid process or material of a cell. It will not be floating around in the watery soup, just waiting for the always water-soluble free radical.

Carcinogenic events don't necessarily start with free radicals, as the religion claims. A strong, high frequency radiation (starting with UV, which damages skin, then the penetrating X-rays, gamma rays, and neutron radiation) does it by forcing logical errors in DNA operations, which nearly always involve RNA, and rely on specific enzymes to perform copy-paste and error checking functions. Only nuclear explosions, nuclear contamination, ingestion would produce free radicals, in the genetic material included, but that means a significant damage on the scale of a Chernobyl cleanup and staff exposure, and that means most of metabolism is in damaged, and imminent death.

Errors in the DNA operations most of the time happen without sub molecular damage. It would mean that a molecule might be mistaken for the DNA base pairs A-T, G-C, the zipper like teeth of the dna's zipper-like helix, or might block the pairing. The molecule could be naphthalene, benzene, or nicotine, etc. The radiation may change a change in a copy-paste enzyme's protein chain, like cap a site with a hydrogen instead of a -CH3, or -CH3 instead of -NH2. Same might be done to any of the base pairs.

Another intellectually dishonest silence is about the lymphatic system, and about the shedding of body materials. Contrary to the charlatans' language of cleaning body, or blood, it is theoretically impossible to do by means of any chemical. The body is a precisely tuned chemical soup. Any chemical or biochemical intrusion means death.
The real cleaning is done by the lymphatic system. One of the ABC's of self-cleaning is capping an old mass of protein, or a cell with glucose, or some other biochemical in the body. The capped mass is naturally ducted to and by the lymphatic system, to other locales, or, engulfed by a white blood cell, like a macrophage, or discarded. The glucose capped old hemoglobin has been measured in blood tests(HbA1c) for quite some time. But the intellectual dishonest charlatans overlooked this, or it was beyond them, being a step too far ahead of their rationale.

If anything is shed inside intestines then it is digested, or eaten by the friendly bacteria, or expelled in the toilet.
If cells are shed outside the body, then they are dandruff, chaff, and are washed off in the shower.
Nothing just sheds off inside the body the way the charlatans claim.

So any guru of the FRAO is a fraud, or a liar, or a thief. I don't know why they would not be.

How Flaky Can Detox Ideas Get

Flaky detox ideas: what the alternative quacks forget is the existence of the lymphatic system. This is what cleans body, removes shed cells, unwelcome biological molecules, own white blood cells that ate viruses and bacteria, blood glucose bound old hemoglobin and other materials. All of that flows to the spleen, the true detox center. Any other detox approach is lethal. Body pH is precise. Anything changing it will cause serious malfunction. Liver has no refuse storage department, it is like a molecular assembly site. Unnecessary water soluble materials and light waste get filtered out by the kidneys. Some out from the skin.
If liver is presented with any new molecule - always getting to the liver through the portal vein - it starts taking it apart into known biological materials, like acetyl COA, fatty acids, glycerides, vitamin building blocks, and makes new molecules, and sends whatever necessary into blood stream for the muscles.

Reading up on the quack detox ideas sound like they have done nothing, not centuries of white coat research.
They did quick rationalizing or back pedaling when it comes to the lymphatic system, and there is a separate field of quacky recommendation. In the spirit of the well known century long blood letting, the quacks make claim that the botanicals, also peddled to the unsuspecting people as liver detox, exist also as lymph drainers. Of course, they do not elaborate on where the drainage occurs, and since when they have had the time to do research on this, and on how many impressively many people. This is disgusting. When you hear science reduced to the word "drainer," maybe it's money down the drain.

How I spot scrape blogs and scraped news traps

Someone like Dr. Mercola or "associated" with another name or an institution.
Text has no reference footnotes, but hyperlinks to explanation of most basic concepts, mouseover - same site, or another associate advertising site.
General reference to sensationalized names of materials, findings, fears.
Text broken up by ads, which have wording similar to the text.
The end of the text is too far on the bottom.
The end of paragraphs has contextually related click bait lists, also heavily on the concern side.
The end of the "article" has a battery of thumbnails to other sites, click bait, no other reason to be on the page.
When googled, the headline or a paragraph turns up on another site, with the same non-scientific name, but official enough to impress the consumers of the concern topic. Excatly why it's called a scrape blog.
The name of the site is smoke and mirrors, like the shopping baggie fear (chemicals in shopping bags migrating into food therein) :

Medicalnewsdaily
BuzzFeed, buzznews
Healthviewmedia
Lancetworld etc (piggy back on the lancet's name)
Greenworldhere
